Richard Barbieri auctions for Teenage Cancer Trust

THE AUCTIONS AND PRIZE DRAW ARE NOW CLOSED - thankyou to everyone who submitted a bid and to the many of you who shared the link.

Many of you will be aware that Richard Barbieri has recently been downsizing his own JAPAN collection, mostly duplicates. Richard decided to hold some auctions to raise money for causes he believes in and kindly offered to donate something for the charity I am connected to.  Rich also wanted to hold some competitions, so that everyone, whatever the size of their bank balance has a chance to own something nice. I suggested this time to combine these approaches, to hopefully maximise impact!

These two auctions come with a prize draw - we want as many people to take part as possible, so please read the whole page to find out how you can enter. Proceeds from these auctions will go to Teenage Cancer Trust, one of the charities associated with Richard's band Porcupine Tree.

The next auction in a few weeks time will go towards Cystic Fibrosis Trust and IFAW (International Fund for Animal Welfare).

Rosemary Barbieri

Richard had this to say; "As this auction launches today, my thoughts are with my sister Rosemary who passed away exactly 10 years ago.  Cancer affects nearly everybody in one way or another and I can think of few things worse than a healthy teenager with their life ahead of them being struck down by this disease. So proceeds will be going to The Teenage Cancer Trust.  My thanks go to Paul Rymer for administering this and thank you in advance for any bids."

Auction 1: Richard Barbieri's Airey & Wheeler blue safari suit

JacketRichard in the blue safari suit

This suit was worn by Richard from 1981 to 1982 for tours, TV appearances and photo sessions while in the group JAPAN. The jacket is men's 38-inch chest, the trousers as measured have a 31 - 32" waist (which Richard found to be too big so rarely wore them). The winner of this auction will receive a signed letter of authenticity from Richard himself.

If you would like to bid for this item please email karnsculpture@mac.com with your name, the word BLUE in the title of the email and highest bid offer. If you want to win the auction you need to outbid that amount. On the final day of the auction bids will become closed but I will email all bidders with an update.

Arrangements will be made for payments privately after the end of the auction.

Because we want to raise as much money as possible for Teenage Cancer Trust we need the auction to be promoted widely. To help this along we have decided to give everyone a chance to own an item of JAPAN related clothing even if you do not bid in the auction! All you need to do is share the link to this web page on your social media feeds, your own blogs, email it to people you know. What you must do is include the hashtag #NIGHTPORTER2016 in any share you make and email karnsculpture@mac.com and include a link to your shared story.

The prize draw will be made by Richard at the end of the auctions and the winner announced here as well as on the Nightporter facebook group

Richard wore the shirt and trouers in 1983 during his time on tour with Ippu-Do.

A piece from The Independent on Airey & Wheeler the specialist tailors who made the safari suit:

Mr Airey, great grandson of James, who founded the shop in 1883, says that even last year's steaming summer failed to convince people to shrug off recession and replace their lightweight suits, because they assumed Airey & Wheeler would be there to serve them next year. Now that it might not be, they have been queuing at its portals.

I assumed Airey & Wheeler had always specialised in tropical clothing, kitting out district officers before they set off to distribute justice in the colonies. Not so. Until after the war, it was just another bespoke tailor. But Anthony's father believed there was a market in lightweight clothes, and started specialising. He bought the current Piccadilly shop in 1957 and soon it was the place to buy your lightweight outfit.

Sir Winston Churchill bought his there. So did John Major when he was Foreign Secretary, and most of our warmer ambassadors have an Airey & Wheeler or three in their wardrobe. Nowadays they would pay £750 or so for a bespoke number, though if they want the ultimate, a Super 100s 8- 9oz worsted is recommended at about £1,000.
