Released hot on the heels of the success of "Adolescent Sex" in Europe. Both tracks can be found on the second Japan album, "Obscure Alternatives".

Deviation was allegedly inspired by Sylvian's experiences in Hamburg in 1977 when Japan had a residency at a nightclub.
